"The streets are our children's playground... SLOW DOWN"-my neighbors
  • 02
To start, I am probably the only person who drives under the speed limit and actually stops at stop signs. So I know this isn't angled at me. And I've posted about this before.

BUT.... I live in a development. There are young children (as young as 2) playing in the road constantly, typically unsupervised. When I was a kid in the 2000s, I was taught to stay out of the road, never chase a ball, etc. But it's very clear that in my current neighborhood this isn't a thing. Children and toddlers run the roads here, and the parents encourage it.

Anyways. We have a neighborhood Facebook page where there was a big PSA last night with a lot of neighbors. chiming in about how all the cars need to slow tf down "this is our children's playground" "this is a child friendly neighborhood" "think of the children!"

Now, I 1000% know that nobody is getting in their car out for children's blod, but that was the general vibe. People were even assuming that NOBODY other than the residents of a certain street should be accessing it because it puts the children at risk. Where else are the cars

supposed to go. How else are people supposed to get home or visit family or get deliveries. Heck, god forbid a squad needs to get to a house. I kid you not, there have been times I've been at a full stop mid street for 5 min because of

children playing Barbie's in the road. They don't even move for cars... and the parents watch to make sure I'm behaving (and others). The options are: turn around or wait for them to be done. That's it. That's the rules here. I've seen so many kids run straight out in front of cars, and

then the parents scream at the cars for not watching out. Ive also seen families close sections of roads for playtime and various sports, even spray painting lines on the road and fully expecting all cars to just reroute without even batting an eye. It feels like I'm living in a twilight zone.

Is this the new normal? Are the streets reserved for playing now? Would you allow your children to play in the street unsupervised? I sadly don't have children so I'm out of the loop I guess. I'm trying to curb my judgements about entitlement here, but want some opinions first. Are the streets

really the new playground? It's been dubbed this in my neighborhood and received thunderous applause. It's a regular development, nothing special, nothing crazy. "When you enter the road... be wary that this is the children's play area.... You need to understand that... stay out of their way!!!!"

ilikefluffy puppies • 1d ago . Absolutely not!! I would honestly call your local police dept and tell them what's going on, and ask that they do drive bys in your neighborhood (during peak "playground" hours if possible).

XSC 1d ago . Absolutely not normal. Idk where to even start on that one. Is the development one way street or cul de sac? Even so that is absolutely not normal and an accident waiting to happen.

StreetEnd5848 OP 1d ago • No, just your typical USA development. My worry for the kids and their worry for the kids are coming from 2 totally different angles and that's why I'm frustrated. I feel teaching road safety is beneficial, but they feel teaching the public "watch out for kids" is best. And no, the kids here are not taught road safety. If I could post some of my security camera footage, you just wouldn't believe it. But I understand why I'm being downvoted. I think people are assuming I

    • psalmwest 1d ago Someone put an illegal speed bump on a road in my town. This road only has one restaurant and one house on it, so it's pretty much assumed the owner (of both) took it upon himself to do so. There was a Facebook thread about it, and the guy's sous chef said, "people speed down this road and it makes it unsafe for

(restaurant owner's) and my children to play!" WHY ARE YOUR CHILDREN PLAYING IN THE STREET?! Needless to say, it became apparent fairly quickly that the town was not responsible for putting the speed bump there, and they sent out workers to take it down. The entitlement is outrageous.

AdorationOx 1d ago In most areas, there are laws about children of a certain age being outside without supervision. Usually anyone under 10 needs an adult, or an older teenager (18ish) to be present to make sure nothing happens to them. Maybe a call to the local police and casually ask them to do a slow drive by to see the type of negligent parents these are.

I live in an area where there are a lot of religious families with a lot of children. Little ones running around barefoot (even when it's 40 degrees outside), running into the street, playing football on the front lawn and hitting cars, etc. Someone got fed up and called the cops. Oh boy, it was a glorious day that day. Now there's at least one

parent outside at all times. Not 100%, but you can drive and not worry about someone darting in front of your car. Doesn't help that our street is a popular cut- through to avoid a traffic light. People driving by don't know the meaning of 25 MPH.

Kidhauler55 • 1d ago My neighbor and I took turns sitting outside watching the kids. We saw a car and would yell.....CAR!!! The kids knew to get out of the street. They'd even grab the bike ramps.

EvenSheepherder6946 1d ago Do they not have yards to play in?..I've seen some new developments in our town that literally have a little strip of lawn and the houses are so close together, I wondered, out loud, who would want one of these houses, and my (at the time) 5 yo grandson piped up and asked "how would I run?" he loves to just run Ө да 4 Reply StreetEnd5848 OP 1d ago Oh we all have decent sized yards, sidewalks on every street and even walking paths round the development.

vvvourtney . 18h ago Send them a link to the "Slow Childrem Playing" turtle link and recommend they use them when the children are playing. I think you may even be able to post as an anonymous member of the group if it's FB.

IIRC, it's illegal to block the road so I would call non- emergency police when this happens and report anonymously. ETA: a word
